Wild poliovirus
Worldwide · Type 1 · 2026 year to date
As of 20 October 2026, there are
The goal remains polio eradication, meaning zero cases and no polio in the environment.
This means every child must be vaccinated, and we must build immunity and protect everyone.

See the surveillance picture change
Environmental surveillance adds another view of poliovirus detections. Play the timeline to see reported detections alongside confirmed cases.
Map loading. Case counts and charts are available above.
Monthly province aggregates, placed at province label points. Locations are approximate, not patient addresses or sampling sites. Green-to-red clouds show smoothed detection counts on a fixed scale, not virus concentration, geographic spread or individual risk. Each unnumbered blue pin represents one case. On monthly maps, pins accumulate from January through the selected month; clouds show that month only. Pins are spread around area centres for visibility, not placed at patient locations. No observations is not proof of no transmission.
Regional map uses WHO EMRO’s published measures. Environmental definitions and update dates differ from the global tables; the map is not a reconciliation of the global headline.

About this dashboard
Sources, dates and revisions
Global case counts come from the public reports linked by GPEI’s Wild Poliovirus Count and cVDPV Count pages. Regional maps use the separate WHO EMRO Power BI report. These sources can differ in timing and definitions. Data are refreshed weekly, not in real time. Last collection: 2026-10-23.
Weekly changes compare saved reporting snapshots, including any retrospective corrections. They do not mean all additional cases began in the latest week. Until a previous distinct reporting snapshot exists, the change stays unavailable. Global cVDPV includes types 1, 2 and 3; human contacts and environmental detections are not added to case counts.
How to interpret the maps and comparisons
Cases and samples are different observations. Case counts do not quantify the remaining distance to eradication. The WPV comparison uses the global source’s matching reporting cutoff. Weekly Pakistan and Afghanistan bar charts use the separate WHO EMRO source and its recorded week field; they do not claim to show when each case was newly announced. A like-for-like cVDPV comparison is not available from the present global table. Charts mark the current year as partial.
Maps use country or province label points from Natural Earth. Clouds are an illustrative smoothing of reported detection counts, not a model of infection risk or a measured plume. The fixed colour scale is 0–40+ for regional maps and 0–300+ for worldwide maps; overlapping clouds add. Side summaries count mapped observations only. Missing locations are not guessed. Global animations use annual data; monthly global geographic history is not supplied by this source.
